What is the International Year of Co-operatives 2012?
On 18 December 2009, the United Nations proclaimed 2012 as the International Year of Co-operatives. The UN recognises that the co-operative business model is a major factor in realising economic and social development. The UN calls on governments, international institutions, co-operatives and other stakeholders to support the development and growth of co-operatives worldwide.
The Australian Government supports the resolution and has endorsed the Australian International Year of Co-operatives Secretariat as the national focal point for IYC in Australia.
This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for co-operatives, credit unions, mutuals, employee owned and social businesses everywhere to get involved. Together we can raise awareness and promote our sustainable and successful businesses. The momentum, potential and possibilities are increasing every day in the countdown to 2012!
